Sacramento County Office of Education "Operation Recognition"
Presenting Diplomas to Those Who Were Unable to Complete High School Due to
World War II, Korean War, or Vietnam War
Sacramento County residents whose high school education was interrupted during World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War due to military service and/or internment have an opportunity to receive belated high school diplomas. Beginning in January 2002, the Sacramento County Board of Education began presenting high school diplomas to qualifying veterans and internees through its Operation Recognition program.

Through the Sacramento County Office of Education's Operation Recognition, an individual who left high school to serve in the U.S. military during the period of December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946 (WW II), the period of June 25, 1950-January 31, 1955 (Korean War), or the period of February 28, 1961-May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War) may apply to receive a high school diploma. To be eligible for a diploma, the WW II, Korean War or Vietnam War veteran must show proof of military service and honorable discharge (DD Form 214 preferred).
Operation Recognition will also present diplomas to Japanese American citizens who left high school for reason of internment in a WW II relocation camp. To be eligible for a diploma, the individual must show proof of having been interned in a relocation camp during the period of December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946.
An additional requirement for all recipients is that the recipient must have been attending high school at the time of enlistment into military service or internment in a WW II relocation center.
Diploma recipients or surviving family members should be current or former residents of Sacramento County. Diplomas may be awarded posthumously to honorees' next-of-kin.
Operation Recognition was adopted unanimously by the Sacramento County Board of Education at its October 16, 2001, meeting. Sacramento County residents are eligible to participate in SCOE's Operation Recognition program. Sacramento County Operation Recognition diplomas are authorized by California Education Code §51430 and §51440. Similar programs have been implemented or are being planned in other regions of California, as well as in the states of Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
