The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is one of 58 county offices located throughout the state. Approximately 650 regular and more than 950 temporary and substitute SCOE staff work year-round providing services that complement and supplement those offered by public school districts in Sacramento County.
Classified Employee of the Month
Yamilet Gaitan, a Program Analyst with Instructional Support Services, was nominated by Director Vicki Alterwitz for her contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. Ms. Gaitan works in SCOE’s Middle School and Reading Intervention Programs Department. She is responsible for producing materials and resources for professional development institutes throughout the state that support AB 466 reading/language arts. Ms. Gaitan additionally provides extensive customer service to those who contact SCOE in regard to materials and trainings. Says her supervisor, “We can all count on Yami to be ready to do whatever it takes to not only get the job done, but done in an extremely professional way.” Ms. Gaitan has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since October, 2000.
Certificated Employee of the Month
Joe Kozel, a Teacher at El Centro Junior/Senior High School, was nominated by Teacher Gerald Brooks for his contributions to the Sacramento County Office of Education. Mr. Kozel serves “at-risk” and “high-risk” students of varying grade levels at the SCOE campus located within the B.T. Collins Juvenile Center (also known as Juvenile Hall). In addition to teaching science five periods a day, he has implemented a substance abuse prevention program and brought in speakers to provide information about prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy. Mr. Kozel also was instrumental in developing curricula for a program to orient new students to the juvenile justice system and help them assume more responsibility for their personal and academic success. Mr. Kozel has been employed by the Sacramento County Office of Education since May, 1992.
