Project Teach helps connect families with children ages birth through five years to early learning programs. Project Teach also helps community-based agencies and early childhood education programs to collaborate with homeless liaisons who serve children and families experiencing homelessness.

Project Teach supports this work to comply with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (Subtitle VII-B), which entitles homeless children and youth to a free, appropriate public education—including preschool. The law applies to state and local educational agencies, including children in public preschool programs.

Program for Pregnant or Parenting College Students Experiencing Homelessness

Project Teach partners with Lutheran Social Services (LSS) of Northern California on a program called College Initiative, working to fill a gap in services for transition-aged youth (ages 18–24) who are experiencing homelessness, pregnant or parenting, and attending one of four local colleges. The initiative addresses critical challenges these students and their children (ages 0–5) face, offering comprehensive services that include housing support and connections to education programs.

Project Teach and LSS hope to empower vulnerable students to overcome barriers and achieve positive outcomes in their transition to independence. The two are working in partnership with the Los Rios Community College District and California State University, Sacramento. Funding comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program.
