Share What You Know: Become a Mentor

When you were growing up, was there someone in your life who encouraged you and showed you the ropes? That person was a mentor to you. You can "pass it on" to the next generation by volunteering as a mentor with the LINKS Mentoring Program.

Overview​​

The LINKS Mentoring Program is seeking adult volunteer mentors to become positive role models for eligible students. Participating students have expressed a desire to work with a mentor to help them prepare for life after high school and have completed an application and orientation process.

This program is unique because it offers ongoing support to mentor/protégé matches by providing staff to facilitate the mentoring sessions each week. A program staff member is assigned to each school and facilitates each group mentor session, providing organized activities, materials, and support. Mentors meet with their protégés for one hour each week. Adult volunteers may commit to mentor a student for one semester or a full school year. Mentoring sessions occur during the school day, usually mid-morning.

Locations

Mentors support students at El Centro Jr./Sr. High School, SCOE's juvenile court school program inside the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility (Juvenile Hall).

Becoming a Mentor

• Fill out and return the LINKS Mentoring ​Program Application
• Schedule and attend an interview/orientation meeting
• Be cleared with a background check and TB test
• Attend a brief mentor training
• Be matched with a student
• Attend mentor sessions once per week, as scheduled
