Sacramento County's 16 district Teachers of the Year 2002, including Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Kathryn Allaman and Sheryl Sorensen, will be honored at ARCO Arena Tuesday, February 19, 2002, at 7 p.m., during the Sacramento Kings vs. Atlanta Hawks game.

The Teachers of the Year will be featured in a special halftime ceremony before the capacity crowd of 17,317. Representatives of Maloof Sports and Entertainment will join Dr. David P. Meaney, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools, in greeting the Teachers of the Year on the basketball court and presenting each with a certificate of achievement.

The Sacramento Kings organization, which has presented Teacher Recognition Night for more than a decade, is treating each Teacher of the Year and his or her guest to a pre-game dinner in the ARCO Arena Skyline Lounge Restaurant and is supplying complimentary tickets for the game. The team also has provided specially priced tickets to more than 800 teachers, students, and families, who will be on hand to support the honorees.

Tickets regularly priced at $32.50 are available for $30; tickets regularly priced at $21.50 are available at $20. Orders must be pre-paid and placed by January 11. A minimum purchase of 10 tickets is required in order to receive the discounted prices. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All school districts within the County of Sacramento, in addition to the Sacramento County Office of Education, are invited each year to participate in the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Program. Because of their size, three districts—Elk Grove, Sacramento City, and San Juan Unified—are eligible to submit two entries. Each district’s Teacher of the Year completes a comprehensive application packet, which includes an extensive biography and answers to questions ranging from personal philosophy of teaching to an understanding of current educational issues. A community selection committee comprised of education professionals, including previous Teachers of the Year, meets in the fall to interview each district Teacher of the Year and select two individuals as Sacramento County Teacher of the Year. Thirteen teachers representing 10 school districts and the Sacramento County Office of Education participated in the Teachers of the Year 2002 Program. The two chosen as Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2002 were SHERYL SORENSEN, second-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School (Natomas Unified School District), and KATHRYN ALLAMAN, math teacher at Center High School (Center Unified School District).

Information about tickets for the Teacher Recognition Night is available by contacting the Sacramento Kings at (916) 928-8117.
