2002–03 Kicks Off with SCOE Employee Recognition Day

Staff Gears Up for School Year at 17th Annual Employee In-Service

Logotype: 150 Years, California County Offices of Education

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) launched the 2002–03 school year with its annual Employee Recognition Day gathering on August 21. Held 8:30 am to 12 noon at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center in Sacramento, the 17th annual in-service event honored staff for years of service to SCOE, recognized those who retired or were chosen as Employees of the Month in the 2001–02 school year, and announced the name of the individual chosen as SCOE's 2003 Teacher of the Year.

Approximately 700 employees enjoyed refreshments, learned about Sacramento County Office of Education plans for the 2002–03 school year, and visited informational displays presented by various SCOE programs and campuses.

Sacramento County Board of Education President Brian Cooley opened the morning with welcoming remarks. County Superintendent of Schools Dr. David P. Meaney presented a "year in review" slide show that touched on program highlights and accomplishments during the 2001–02 school year.

SCOE Program Specialist Meladee McCarty shared a special multi-media presentation entitled, "150 Years of Service – The Winds of Change." Ms. McCarty, nationally known co-author of the "Chicken Soup" series of books, was assisted in the presentation by her husband and fellow author/acclaimed speaker, Hanoch McCarty. The theme was chosen in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of county offices of education in California, which is taking place in the year 2002.

Dan Leonard, SCOE Juvenile Court Schools teacher, introduced members of the "SCOE Scholars," a group of employees and Board members who contribute their time each year to support Susan Komen Foundation "Race for the Cure."

Robin Pierson, Assistant Superintendent, Education Programs, thanked SCOE teachers who are serving in the PAR (Peer Assistance and Education Review) Program.

Infant Development Program Principal Gina Guarneri introduced Michael Bernardis, who talked about his reign as SCOE's Teacher of the Year 2002 ROP Principal Linda Mitchell introduced SCOE's newly selected Teacher of the Year 2003, Jim Davis, an ROP instructor who teaches the Retail Sales Careers program at SCOE's J.C. Penney classroom in the Florin Mall.

Serving as master of ceremonies for the event was John Burge, Database Designer/Information Systems Analyst, who works in SCOE's Educational Internet Technologies Department. John Burge was assisted with presentations of awards by County Board of Education Trustees Brian Cooley, Harold Fong, Elinor L. Hickey. Also participating were SCOE Personnel Commission members Clellan "Cy" Young and Donna Straffen.

The event concluded with the annual "Here's Looking at You, SCOE!" slide show featuring hundreds of pictures submitted by employees during the 2001-2002 program year.

Door prizes contributed by area businesses, vendors and education supporters were awarded. Employee contributions to the annual Employee Recognition Day food drive benefiting the Sacramento Food Bank overflowed the collection barrels.
