Student Art Show Kicks off 2003 Arts Education Month

Artwork on Display at SCOE Through April

Organizers holding stacks of certificates to be presented to artists

Students from throughout Sacramento County displayed their artistic talents at a Sacramento County Office of Education art show and reception on March 4. The show was open to all schools in Sacramento County. Entries in the non-juried show were submitted by teachers from 27 local schools. Artists included more than one hundred 1st-12th grade students.

Students' original creations, including paintings, ceramics, photography, and three-dimensional works, may be viewed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Sacramento County Office of Education: 9738 Lincoln Village Drive, Sacramento. The art show will be displayed through April.

The show was conducted in observance of Arts Education Month, recognized during March 2003 by the Sacramento County Board of Education. Students and teachers received certificates commemorating their participation in the art show.

The exhibit was sponsored by Arts Alliance-Arts Espirit de Corps, an arts education leadership network coordinated by the Sacramento County Office of Education. The long-term goal of the Sacramento County Office of Education is to provide a high-quality Standards-based K–12 arts education program for all students within the county's 16 public school districts. According to Assistant Superintendent Joyce Wright, Ed.D., "It's essential to build a critical mass of in-depth teacher understanding on how the California Visual and Performing Arts Standards directly relate to the delivery of effective classroom instruction and the quality of student learning." The focus of Arts Alliance-Arts Espirit de Corps, she said, is to support arts education leadership within the county, to raise awareness of current and evolving arts programs, and to provide professional development workshops designed to strengthen educators' use of the Arts Standards as they relate to curriculum instruction. Information about the Arts Alliance-Arts Espirit de Corps is available by contacting Maureen Gemma of the Sacramento County Office of Education: (916) 228-2371.

Suggested activities related to Arts Education Month have been prepared by the California Department of Education Visual and Performing Arts Office.
