The Sacramento Kings mascot Slamson, members of the Royal Court Dancers, and Sacramento Monarchs announcer Shawn Allen joined Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon in recognizing teacher Barbara Harris for her exemplary achievement as an educator. Barbara Harris, selected as Folsom Cordova Unified School District Teacher of the Year 2005, is one of two local educators recognized as Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2005.
Slamson, who brought a pizza lunch for the students, performed for the students and signed autographs. Shawn Allen presented Barbara Harris with a Sacramento Kings player-signed basketball, and with Royal Court Dancers Sasha and Kelsey, talked to the class about the importance of education and staying in school. Maloof Sports and Entertainment Director of Community Service Karen Robinson-Salley presented a donation of 500 books to the school.
The event was the second of two appearances presented this year in conjunction with the Teacher Appreciation program conducted by the Sacramento Kings, Maloof Sports and Entertainment, and its partners NECA-IBEW and HealthNet. For more than a dozen years, Maloof Sports and Entertainment has been a primary sponsor of the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year program. The Sacramento County Teachers of the Year program is coordinated by the Sacramento County Office of Education under the direction of Superintendent David W. Gordon.
School districts throughout the county are eligible to participate in the annual Teachers of the Year program. Educators chosen to represent their districts as Teachers of the Year 2006 will be honored at a countywide recognition dinner presented September 7, 2005, by the Sacramento County Office of Education. At the dinner, the names of two local educators chosen to represent the entire county in the 2006 California Teachers of the Year program will be announced.
