Sacramento County's 17 district Teachers of the Year 2008 were honored at Raley Field on Friday, May 2, during a special pre-game ceremony of the Sacramento River Cats/Iowa Cubs game.
The reigning Sacramento County Teachers of the Year, Rob Myers, from Garden Valley Elementary School in the Del Paso Heights School District, and Jeannette Providence, from Grant High School in the Grant Joint Union High School District, were among the honorees. Both threw a ceremonial first pitch.
Officials from the River Cats organization joined Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon in greeting the Teachers of the Year on the field. Prior to the ceremony, the River Cats hosted honorees and their guests at a pre-game reception.
"We are grateful to the River Cats for being such passionate supporters of education and for recognizing the contributions of some of the Sacramento area's best and brightest teachers," said Superintendent Gordon.
This is the second year the Sacramento River Cats have recognized the area's top teachers with an evening specifically dedicated to the area's Teachers of the Year. In February, the Teachers of the Year were also honored during halftime of a Sacramento Kings game.
The Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Program is coordinated annually by the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) to recognize the achievements of local educators and to raise awareness of the valuable role that teachers play in the lives of their students and in the community.
