Deane resigned from her post effective October 11, after moving out of the area she represented. She had served on the Board since 1992. Her term was scheduled to expire in June 2012.

According to the bylaws of the Sacramento County Board of Education, within 20 days of the effective date of the vacancy, the Board shall consider the matter of filling the vacancy. When a Board member resigns four or more months before the end of a County Board member's term, within 60 days of the effective date of resignation the Board shall either order an election or make a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy.
