Board of Education to Make Provisional Trustee Appointment

Resignation of Area 4 Trustee Created Open Seat

At its October 19 meeting, the Sacramento County Board of Education voted to make a provisional appointment to fill a vacancy for Trustee Area 4. The post, with a term expiring in June 2012, became vacant following the October 11 resignation of Trustee Victoria L. Deane. Ms. Deane, a board member since 1992, moved out of the area she represented.

When a Board member resigns four or more months before the end of a County Board member's term, within 60 days of the effective date of resignation, the Board must either order an election or make a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy.

The Board considered two options, which were ordering an election or making a provisional appointment to fill the vacancy by December 10, 2010. A special election potentially could have cost the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) between $450,000 and $650,000.

"Our goal is to make this selection process as wide open and public as possible by inviting residents of the Area 4 community to comment on what qualities they want in the person who will represent them," said Board President Harold Fong. The Board encourages the community to provide input into the selection of a new Trustee at its meeting on November 16, 2010, at 6:30 p.m.

Trustee Area 4 represents the following: communities of Orangevale, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, and a portion of Carmichael. School districts: a major portion of San Juan Unified and a small portion of Twin Rivers Unified.

Applications for the vacant Trustee Area 4 seat will be accepted during regular business hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and must be received — not postmarked — by 4 p.m. on November 23, 2010. Applications should be submitted to the President of the Sacramento County Board of Education either in person at the David P. Meaney Education Center, 10474 Mather Boulevard, Mather, CA 95655 or by mail to P.O. Box 269003, Sacramento, CA 95826.

The application must include a letter of interest, a résumé, and no more than three letters of recommendation.

Individuals interested in applying for the open Area 4 Trustee position may contact Carla Miller, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent, at (916) 228-2410 for further information.

The Board will consider applications, interview candidates, and make a provisional appointment at its meeting on December 7, 2010.
