Baseball fans at Raley Field cheered as the Sacramento River Cats paid tribute to the Sacramento County Teachers of the Year 2018 in a pre-game ceremony on April 13.
Among the honorees were the two reigning Sacramento County Teachers of the Year: Rebecca Siegert McGill (an AP English teacher and Senior Project Coordinator at Rosemont High School in the Sacramento City U.S.D.), and Jeff Zahniser (who teaches culinary arts at Leo A. Palmiter Jr./Sr. High School, a Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) campus providing education to special needs students). Both teachers threw a ceremonial first pitch.
After the on-field ceremony, the River Cats hosted honorees and their guests to a pre-game reception. During the reception, the teachers received words of praise from Dave Gordon, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools and Greg Coletti, Vice President of Corporate Sponsorships for the Sacramento River Cats. The River Cats, Supercuts, and SCOE’s School of Education sponsored the event.
This is the thirteenth year the River Cats have recognized the area’s top teachers with an evening dedicated to the area’s Teachers of the Year. Last month, the Teachers of the Year were also honored with an on-court ceremony during a Sacramento Kings game.
The Sacramento County Teachers of the Year Program is coordinated annually by SCOE to recognize the achievements of local educators and to raise awareness of the valuable role that teachers play in the lives of their students and in the community.
