Board of Education Elects New Officers for 2018–19

Trustees Elected in June Take Oath of Office

New officers were elected at the July 10 meeting of the Sacramento County Board of Education. Two new trustees and one incumbent were also sworn into office.

The Board elected O. Alfred Brown, Sr. (Area 5 Trustee) as Board President. He is a Professor Emeritus of Law at Sacramento State University. Joanne Ahola (Area 4 Trustee), was elected Board Vice President. She is a parent trainer and organizer for the California Charter Schools Association.

Two newly elected trustees took the oath of office for terms that will expire in 2022:

  • Karina Talamantes represents Area 2. She is chief of staff for Sacramento City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby. She has a Bachelor of Science in community and regional development from UC Davis.
  • Paul A. Keefer, MBA, Ed.D., represents Area 3. He is executive director of the Pacific Charter Institute. He has an Ed.D. in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix, a master’s in business administration from National University, and a Bachelor of Science in environmental design from UC Davis.

Also sworn in was incumbent Bina Lefkovitz, representing Area 1. She is an educational consultant and part-time faculty member at California State University, Sacramento where she teaches courses in youth development and leadership.

Trustees are elected for four year terms. The Board President and Vice President offices are held for one year. The Board will continue to hold its regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month with a scheduled start time of 6:30 p.m.

The County Board of Education, consisting of seven elected members, derives its authority from the State Constitution (Article IX § 3.3) and laws of the State of California. The Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools serves as secretary to the Board. Besides conducting its regular business, other Board responsibilities include hearing student expulsion appeals and interdistrict transfer appeals.
