Grant Is a Catalyst for Enhanced Arts Education in the Region

David W. Gordon, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools, was joined by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and other dignitaries today to announce the accomplishments of a $1 million arts education grant.

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) was awarded the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grant in December 2018 through the California Department of Education. The grant focused on providing all students with access to well-rounded educational opportunities. The funding created a regional Arts Education Community of Practice made up of school district educators and local arts organizations in Sacramento County. The group is helping local districts implement arts education for all students, with collaborative efforts continuing through June 2020.

“This grant has been a real catalyst for arts education in our local schools,” said Superintendent Gordon. “The report we are releasing today shows this grant improved access to arts education by developing a more creative environment for the students in our county.”

“We have one goal, and it’s one very simple goal: the complete restoration of arts education in all of our schools in Sacramento,” Mayor Steinberg said. “The creative economy must be central to building the new economy in Sacramento.”

 

The announcement included the release of a report detailing arts education growth in all local school districts in Sacramento County. Major accomplishments of the newly established SCOE Arts Education Community of Practice include:

  • Building relationships between school districts and regional arts organizations to provide arts education to students in Sacramento County.
  • Identifying elements for districts to include in arts plans that guide arts education in schools.
  • Providing professional learning opportunities about arts curriculum and California arts standards.
  • Supporting arts organizations in developing and implementing their arts education programs.

Thirteen local school districts, SCOE, and a group of 13 distinguished arts organizations are involved in the project.
