Vista del Lago High School, from the Folsom Cordova Unified School District, was announced last Friday evening as the winner of the 2021 Sacramento County Academic Decathlon competition. This is the first time the school has won the countywide competition, which was conducted online by the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) over the past few weeks due to COVID-19 restrictions. The announcement of the results was made during an online award ceremony. SAFE Credit Union is providing $10,000 in scholarships this year to be distributed among the top-scoring students.
To prepare for the academic competition, students devoted months of study to this year’s theme: The Cold War. The Decathlon normally culminates with a “Super Quiz,” held in a high school gym, with teams competing in front of a large audience that cheers them on. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, that was not possible this year, so testing, speeches, and interviews were conducted online.
The Vista del Lago team will now advance to the statewide California Academic Decathlon, which will be held in March (dates to be determined). The winning California team moves on to the national competition.
