Last month, Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Education Budget Trailer bill (Assembly Bill 130), which contains new options related to independent study for the 2021–22 school year.
For this school year, all school districts and county offices of education are required to offer students the option of independent study. New Education Code provisions give families the option to enroll students in in-person instruction or, if they determine that in-person instruction would put their student’s health at risk, they may request independent study for 2021–22.
Offering independent study programs becomes optional for school districts and county offices of education in future school years.
