SCOE’s Teacher Intern Program offers preservice coursework focused on teaching fundamentals, followed by a two-year paid classroom internship.

In today’s interconnected world, the ability to speak more than one language prepares students for a globalized workforce that depends on multilingual employees. Local school districts have reported an increasing need for world language teachers, so the Teacher Intern Program—operated by the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) to prepare high-quality teachers and leaders for a career in education—is launching a new World Language Credential program for grades 6–12. Graduates will be equipped to teach their focus language other than English (examples include French, German, Hmong, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish).

The Teacher Intern Program is a two-year SCOE School of Education program that’s an excellent option for recent college graduates or professionals seeking a rewarding second career as a teacher. The initial preservice coursework for the new World Language Credential program, focused on the fundamentals of teaching, begins in February 2025. All instruction is live (a combination of online and in-person classes), similar to college-level coursework. The first cohort will then start an intensive two-year internship program.

Teacher Intern Program Offers Multiple Credentials

In addition to the new World Language Credential, the Teacher Intern Program offers credentials for single subject math, science, art, music, dance, and theater, plus multiple subject and mild to moderate support needs credentials. An accelerated program was also recently announced to help already-credentialed teachers earn a dance, art, music, or theater credential.

After completing a pre-service program, candidates become full-time teacher interns, earning a salary, benefits, and retirement credits for their classroom work. They receive outstanding support throughout the process, working closely with an on-site mentor and receiving ongoing coaching from SCOE supervisors and faculty from the SCOE School of Education as they earn their credentials. The Teacher Intern Program has helped more than 300 people earn their credentials, and its courses are approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
