This holiday season, the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) demonstrated its unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and community through a series of impactful activities. Its “Season of Giving” and “Celebration of Lights” brought SCOE staff together to support students, families, and the Sacramento community, embodying the spirit of connection and collaboration that defines SCOE’s culture.

This November and December, SCOE staff joined forces to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, putting their collective generosity into action, from helping to address food insecurity to providing gifts and scholarships. Their efforts exemplified the office’s dedication to creating opportunities for all.

SCOE employees donated frozen turkeys to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, helping local families enjoy a warm holiday meal. They participated in the largest Thanksgiving Day “fun run” in the country, the Run to Feed the Hungry, showing their commitment to addressing food insecurity. In collaboration with PRO Youth & Family, SCOE provided holiday meals for students and families served by SCOE programs—including those from El Centro, Elinor L. Hickey, Nathaniel S. Colley, Palmiter, Senior Extension, and CARE.

SCOE personnel also raised funds for the Gary K. Hart Resiliency Scholarship, donated books for the “Deck the Hall” fundraiser at the El Centro Juvenile Court School Program, and donated presents for the Holiday Family Gift Drive, benefiting families who receive services from Special Education and Early Learning programs. At the close of their Season of Giving, unwrapped toys collected by SCOE staff were also delivered to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Toy Project, spreading holiday joy to families across the county.

“The generosity and compassion of SCOE staff is truly inspiring,” said Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools, David W. Gordon. “Their efforts to uplift students, families, and our community reflect the values that drive everything we do at SCOE—equity, inclusion, and empowerment.”

In celebration of 2024, SCOE transformed its David P. Meaney Education Center into a space for connection and celebration in “A Celebration of Lights” where staff gathered to enjoy refreshments, celebrate the season’s successes, and share holiday cheer. Staff also created “Luminous Lane,” where they and invited guests could visit departments (“Points of Light”) creatively decorated to welcome colleagues. The tour provided an opportunity for staff to connect, exchange ideas, and appreciate the creativity and dedication of their peers.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

The generous efforts of SCOE staff underscore the organization’s dual mission of providing both direct and indirect services to support students and school districts. Whether it’s through specialized education, career readiness programs, professional development, or business support, SCOE remains steadfast in its commitment to equity and empowerment.

As the holidays approach, SCOE reflects on a season filled with generosity, collaboration, and celebration. The SCOE community exemplifies what it means to come together to create a brighter future for students, families, and educators.

Happy holidays from SCOE, and thanks to everyone who made this season so memorable!
