Becky Sullivan, SCOE Director of K–12 English Language Arts, has been selected to serve a two-year term on the State Literacy Team.

Literacy is essential to education, laying the groundwork for learning and shaping student success. The California Comprehensive State Literacy Plan is a guide to help improve reading and writing skills for students from birth through grade 12 by aligning state literacy initiatives, content standards, and state guidance documents. It focuses on making sure every student gets the instruction and support they need to build strong literacy skills.

Becky Sullivan, Director of K–12 English Language Arts for the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), has been appointed to serve a second, two-year term on the State Literacy Team, which will be revising the Literacy Plan to include updated, evidence-based practices and guidance documents. The group will also be updating the state’s implementation guides. “It’s an honor to represent SCOE and support the students of California in becoming proficient readers,” said Sullivan.

SCOE Literacy Efforts

SCOE itself has launched a literacy initiative called Sacramento County READS, focused on the development and implementation of collaborative systems of teaching and learning. Through innovative programs, community partnerships, family engagement, and supportive services, the program is dedicated to improving reading and literacy outcomes for all learners. SCOE is also the lead agency for the Literacy Coaches and Reading Specialists Educator Training Grant program, guiding more than 800 schools across the state in their literacy efforts.
