2025 CA Literacy Conference Underscores the Right to Read

Free Statewide Event to Promote Literacy for All

CA Literacy Conference: Summer 2025 (Everyone Has the Right to Read)

Literacy is the foundation of lifelong learning, giving students access to knowledge, opportunities, and success. Many children struggle with reading proficiency, though, making it essential for educators to stay informed about best practices.

The 2025 California Literacy Conference is a free, virtual event designed to equip teachers, administrators, and literacy advocates with effective strategies to support student reading success. The conference is being hosted by the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) and Napa County Office of Education (NCOE) with funding from the California Department of Education Literacy Coaches and Reading Specialists Educator Training (LCRSET) grant.

A Day of Learning and Collaboration

The literacy conference will be held on June 17, 2025 (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) with more than 50 sessions about key literacy topics. It will emphasize that literacy is a right, not a privilege. Many students face barriers to reading success, including English learners, students with disabilities, and those from underserved communities.

Addressing these challenges requires a collective effort from educators, school leaders, and policymakers. During the conference, these groups will explore:

  • Multilingual Learner Best Practices—Support students learning English
  • MTSS & Special Education—Support tiered literacy and inclusive practices
  • Adolescent Literacy—Engage older students in reading
  • Assessment Strategies—Use data to drive literacy instruction
  • Literacy Leadership & Coaching—Build capacity among educators

The conference will open with a keynote by Kristen Wynn, a recognized leader in literacy education and a passionate advocate for the science of reading. Attendees will then hear from authors, speakers, and experts from across the country, participating in breakout sessions and exploring new techniques that can be immediately applied in their classrooms.
