Learn About Teacher Residencies at 2025 Symposium

Annual Statewide Event to Highlight Best Practices and Research

Annual Statewide Residency Symposium: May 1–2, 2025

This year’s Statewide Residency Symposium will be held May 1–2 at the Legacy Resort Hotel and Spa in San Diego.

Teacher residency programs, modeled after medical residencies, allow aspiring educators to train alongside experienced mentor teachers while working to obtain their teaching credentials. In California, the Statewide Residency Technical Assistance Center (SRTAC) provides targeted technical assistance to support residency programs, specifically aiming to help them address educator shortages.

SRTAC’s 2025 Statewide Residency Symposium (being held May 1–2 in San Diego) is an opportunity for California teacher residency programs to learn from nationally renowned teacher preparation experts and fellow residency implementers. Attendees will have networking opportunities and learn ways to strengthen California’s residency movement.

Seasoned leaders, alongside those exploring residencies for the first time, will find insightful discussions, actionable strategies, and inspiring connections to help shape the future of teaching and learning. Symposium attendees will:

  • Connect with K–12 leaders, educator preparation programs, and community organizations
  • Learn about groundbreaking teacher residency practices, research, and success stories
  • Collaborate on building sustainable solutions for educator recruitment, preparation, and retention

Register to attend the symposium—learn about the keynote speakers and topics being discussed at the statewide event, hosted in partnership with The Residency Lab.

SCOE Support for Teacher Residency

The SRTAC consortium is divided into five geographic regions led by “hub” county offices of education. The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) leads a 15-county region in Northern California. SRTAC is working to create a scalable and affordable system that attracts and retains diverse cohorts, reflecting the communities they serve.

Locally, the SCOE School of Education partners with Sacramento County school districts, Pacific Oaks College, and Teacher’s College of San Joaquin to operate the SCOE Teacher Residency Program. Offering an accelerated, yearlong student teaching placement at a single school site, the program is currently accepting applications for the 2025–26 school year.

There are many opportunities for a rewarding career with great benefits in the world of education—in and out of the classroom. SCOE provides information related to employment in education to help start an education career pathway, grow and develop existing skills, or discover current employment opportunities.
