Enhance Inquiry-Based Learning Through Hands-On Instruction

The Making Meaning Through Sensemaking workshop for K–6 math and science teachers is scheduled for July 14–15, 2025.

Effective math and science instruction is about more than just teaching facts—it helps students make sense of the world around them. When students connect new concepts with their existing knowledge and experiences, they develop stronger problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of the subject.

“Sensemaking” is a powerful instructional approach that fosters these types of connections, encouraging inquiry, exploration, and critical thinking. Experts from the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) are leading a two-day workshop on the topic to help educators integrate more engaging and meaningful learning experiences into their lessons. The hands-on Making Meaning Through Sensemaking workshop is designed for K–6 math and science teachers. The training is being held July 14–15, 2025.

Participants will learn classroom-ready techniques for integrating math and science instruction in ways that make learning more relevant and interactive. They will collaborate with fellow educators, engage in hands-on activities, and leave with resources they can apply in their classrooms. Van Lay (SCOE Math Curriculum Specialist) and Amy Kraft (SCOE Science Curriculum Specialist) will lead the course.

For registration questions, email curriculum@scoe.net.
