Classified school employees are vital to ensuring that daily education operations run smoothly, efficiently, and effectively. These experts often work behind the scenes as they provide administrative, technical, and operational support—frequently with years of knowledge and experience.

The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) conducts an annual Classified School Employees of the Year program to pay tribute to the efforts of SCOE’s outstanding classified staff working in non-certificated, non-management roles. At a lunch reception held at SCOE’s David P. Meaney Education Center on March 31, Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools David W. Gordon congratulated the six staff nominees. He acknowledged their exemplary performance and their many contributions to the success of SCOE programs, services, and special projects.

2025 Winner Announced

Yesterday, Superintendent Gordon and Deputy Superintendent Nancy Herota, Ed.D., followed up with a surprise visit to a department staff meeting to announce in front of her colleagues that Jasmine Gaviola had been selected as this year’s SCOE Classified School Employee of the Year. Gaviola, a Staff Secretary for the SCOE School of Education, was presented with balloons and an arrangement of succulent plants grown by students in the Urban Oasis horticulture program at Leo A. Palmiter Jr./Sr. High school.

The Sacramento County Board of Education will formally recognize SCOE’s 2025 Classified School Employee of the Year at an upcoming meeting.

SCOE’s classified staff are represented by the California School Employees Association (CSEA Chapter 480).

Competition Details

Professionals from up to nine occupational specialties are nominated by SCOE leadership to compete. Nominees complete applications, which are scored by the Superintendent’s Cabinet. One person is selected as SCOE’s Classified Employee of the Year, and one individual from each category with high enough scores can move on to the county competition.

Winners at the county level become Sacramento County Classified School Employees of the Year. Eligible staff members move on to the state competition.
